What is a gram of protein? What is a gram of carbohydrate? What is a gram of fat?

So too often trainers throw out numbers, eat 1300 calories with 150 grams of protein, 120 carbs, 22 grams of fat...

Well most people don't know what this really means, so today lets talk about this. Firstly how many calories is each?

How many calories is 1 gram of protein? etc.

1 gram of protein = 4 calories

1 gram of carbs = 4 calories

1 gram of fat = 9 calories

As you can see and probably would have figured fat is more calories. We'll talk more down the line about what to eat and what not to eat, and check out the 4 diet commandments as well but for now in regards to grams... Here's some rough ideas:

A chicken breast = 30 grams of protein
A small chococlate bar only has 3 grams of protein and is loaded with sugar and fat

A bottle of water has zero of everything and is great to drink!
A bottle of soda has up to 240 calories and up to 65 grams of sugar (simple carbs)

Spinach has only 35 calories, 2 grams of protein, and 9 grams of carbs, no fat.

Take a careful look at labels, and later I'll post a whole blog about labels. How are the calories divided? How much is fat, protein, and carbs? And how much sugar is in what you are eating?

Healthy foods can be loaded with protein and have little to no fat. Some complex carbs can be loaded with carbs as well with no fat, now depending on your goal will decide how many carbs you want to consume, but make no mistake carbs are not the enemy, only in excess. Even too much protein is bad for you at some point. Definitely limit your fat intake, but zero fat would not be recommended either. Fat is a stored energy supply (though sometimes we may store too much!), you'll need it if blood sugar runs low, it also helps in the absorption of vitamins, and lets face it, nobody wants to just be skin and bones.

As always remember I am not a doctor or dietitian, these views and numbers are my opinion only and it is recommended you talk to a doctor or medical professional before starting any new diet program.
