Diet or Cardio For Weight Loss?

Losing Weight, Cardio or Diet?

So today lets debate the age old question, better to hit the treadmill non stop, or better to be a master of your kitchen and cravings...

What's the better way to lose weight, by increasing cardio or dieting? Short answer, diet. Long answer, you absolutely need both. You can't chow down on burgers, fries, and shakes then expect to be in shape because you run a couple of hours a day. Don't get me wrong, you'll be in better shape than the person that does no cardio, but you are deterring your long term weight loss goals big time. Having the best diet you can have is a stronger option... I've seen tons of overweight people hitting the treadmill day and night not making the weight loss goals they need to make due to diet problems, I've trained some of them, and as soon as we adjusted the diet, that was when the true gains came through losing pounds and inches. I've never met anyone in my life, and in my 15 plus years in the gym that had a great diet and did not lose weight, even if their lifting and cardio program was less than perfect. However, good cardio could make that dieting even better and the weight loss even faster. When people state dieting doesn't work, it's usually an issue of patience. Too many people want that fast result, if it took you 18 years to become overweight, it might not come off in 18 weeks, it may take a year or two years to get the body you want, committment is the only true way it will come off.

You will need to learn to eat again the way we were supposed to, and you will commit to cardio whether it's the treadmill, sports, running outside, whatever. You will learn to make cardio and a great diet a part of your life, not a roadblock in it.

Consult a doctor or medical professional before beginning any diet or fitness program.

  1. Excellent article, couldn't agree more. I want to write an article in the fall about making sure you don't gain TOO much fat in the winter. More of a problem in nyc since Arizona is hot year round..
