Percentage Of People Who Can Bench 225lbs, 275, 315, etc

What percentage of people can bench press certain weights, in our study which has taken place in over a decade in the gym, this is what myself and the Captain Power have come up with:

185lbs/83kg: Over 60% of gym goer's will hit one plate and a quarter, many within the first 16 months of training.

225lbs/102kg: 40% of gym goer's

275lbs/124kg: 15% of gym members, we are starting to hit the elite

315lbs/142kg: 8% of hardcore gym members

365lbs/165kg: 2% of gym members, even in a hardcore steroid gym, seeing someone do 3 plates and a quarter may only be limited to 20%.

405lbs/165kg: less than 1% of gym members will ever bench press 4 plates

455lbs/206kg: less than 0.5% of gym members will ever reach this level, or 495lbs/224kg or more. This is an elite that must have a lifetime dedication, a rock solid diet, and most likely some anabolic help.

Accounting that most of the population does not train regularly, even if you are benching 185lbs, you probably bench press more than 70% of the population in your age group in America, and more so as you get older!

So lift on!!!!

  1. You think 40% of gym members can bench 225? On which planet? 75% of members do not even touch a barbell at the gym.

  2. He didn't say sets of 225, just bench it
I can believe 40%, many not well, but they can

  3. I am 60 years old and can bench press 225, but over the years I have been a consistent member of fitness gyms (Lifetime, 24hour Fitness, LA Fitness, etc.)and I haven't seen 10% of males that can do that. Maybe at Gold's Gym or other weightlifting gym the 40% would apply.

  5. I'm 56 years old and have arthritis, yet I hit 315 (single-rep) for the first time this year. Nobody was more surprised than I was myself! Been lifting for about 5 years, but only making serious progress for the last 2.

    Here's the key to success:

What makes the most difference is a really good trainer. A trainer who watches your form very closely, and corrects the small problems before they become big problems. And sets aggressive but achievable progress goals along the way.

  6. I am 53 years old, do not use a trainer and can bench 455 to date. It has taken me 2 years of serious training to reach that weight and my flat bench goal for 2018 is 500 pounds. I work out religiously never missing a workout even if I am on the road.

I used to lift quite a lot when I was younger and on and off when I was in the military and believe the that has helped me tremendously in my gains as I have have gotten older.

am a RAW lifter and do not take any drugs but I do follow a very strict diet and supplement routine. I only train using 5 lifts (Flat Bench, Deadlifts, Standing Press, Squat, Bent Over Rows). After all my heavy lifts I de-eload around 25% and rep to near exhaustion. On the flat bench specifically I currently follow all my heavy reps with sets of 315 for 12+ reps. This weight will increase proportionately as my PR's improve.

  11. I'm 58 in March 2029 and benched 365 in October 2019 at "The Gym" in Iowa City, Iowa. I squat 335 and deadlift 335. It's taken me over 40 years to reach these numbers in good form and not.be crippled the following days. 😁 A lot of it is form. Most of it is mental. I saw a 170 pound 19 year old bench 315 at Blue Moon Fitness in Bellevue Nebraska once. He made it look easy. Some people are gifted. Some people are consistent and tenacious.

  12. I'm 32 years old and have been lifting for 18 years, average 2-3 days a week. My Bench is 465 pounds all natural. Lot of my strength gains are from habit and keep a goal. I work full time and have a wife and 1 year old daughter. There is always time, even if it's 11 at night.

    1. Im calling BS if you bench 565lbs naturally with no bench shirt. If it was equipped with triple ply bench shirt then you should state 'equipped'.

    2. You can choose to believe this or not, but at 28 years old I was able to bench 565 lbs with zero anabolic help and no shirts. This is a raw "gym" lift. Would not have counted in a competition. I was a solid 500 comp lifter. This is at a weight of 220lbs. I've always been naturally strong. My first time benching in high school I hit 225. Anyway, take it as you will. Keep lifting gentlemen

    4. Thank you for your service!
I’m 35 and have lifted on and off for the last 5-6 years. A couple of months on and 6 months to a year off. I own 3 businesses and get busy often. When I was 25 I spent a year training as a power lifter. I reached a max bench press of 612 pounds. I’m 35 now and have been back at it for 5 weeks after taking a year off. I just did 500 again. I would imagine I have good genetics. My dad was a strong man. I have never taken any supplements or drugs besides protein and energy drinks before lifting. I’m hoping I can stay strong like you in 20 years. Good luck and again thank you for serving!!!! Happy thanksgiving

  14. I would say this is more accurate based on what I've seen the past 5 years of lifting, and only if it is a pause bench of at least a half second.
225lbs: 40% of gym goers will pause bench 225lbs
275lbs: 8% of gym goers(people who continue to strength train)
    315lbs: 3% of gym goers(serious strength trainers)
    365lbs: <1% of gym goers(male)
405lbs: <0.05% of gym goers(male) will ever bench press 405lbs
455lbs: <0.005% of gym goers(male) will ever pause bench 455lbs

    2. The fact that you felt the need to seek validation on random forums is really pathetic. Also calling bs on the 500 lbs. The truly praiseworthy are the lifters who can top 500+ lbs bench and stay humble. No attention seeking or boasting whatsoever.

  24. Same with the last poster...did 275 x3 on incline today, was wondering where I stood (like it really matters). I graduated high school at 17 pressing 325. Everyone thought I was on steroids including my football coach who started the rumor. Been downhill from there lol

  26. I am 46 and I bench 355 with a pause. My weight is 190 pounds. I do lots of pull-ups and run 10 miles a week. Not really very fast just a 10 minute mile. And Spartan race.

  29. Lol. I love these comments. Since we're throwing out percentages, I'd say approximately 75% of the people claiming 400 to 500 pounds as newbies and over 50 are full of s$@$ and the reason statistics are so skewed.

  33. A company called Chaos makes custom draco 9mm
AK pistols. The most unusual feature of these AKs which immediately jumps out is the brace that houses an AK magazine! draco 9mm

The Chaos magazine brace is also folding and removable. Probably it features some sort of a quick detach mechanism to remove and use the magazine. Just imagine how tacticool that kind of magazine change procedure would look.draco 9mm

Among other features of these AK pistols are the top Picatinny rail and a forearm with KeyMod slots. It also comes with HK-style iron sights. The MSRP at $725.99. Right now they are out of stock but can be custom made upon order. The brace is not available separately.draco 9mm

  35. No way 40% of regular gym goers can bench 225. It's closer to about 10% of gym goers and less than 1% of the general population. 405 is almost unheard of, less than .05 %.

  36. Been going to gymns since 1978, steady. Have never seen 400. My top was 365x2 at age 41 Body weight was 202. Now at 64, just got 260 for 4. Scared to push higher, too many injuries. If I F UP, I’ll be out for 6 months minimum.
